New threads from old bread: Scientists grow cotton-like fibres from food

2:09 min

Researchers in Borås are making cotton-like fibres from fungi grown on old bread that could one day be used in new clothes.

The 4-year project at Borås University aims to offer a more environmentally friendly alternative to existing fibre production as well as cut down on food waste.

Akram Zamani, senior lecturer at the university, says while her team is still working on perfecting the yarn she thinks the fibres could eventually be used to make items like clothes, furniture or even medical textiles.
