Despite daylight killing, Malmö gun violence is declining

3:14 min

Despite the shocking fatal shooting of a young mother on a street in Malmö, gun violence is going down in the city.

So far this year, three people have been killed after being shot in the southern city of Malmö. That can be compared to 12 people in the whole of last year.

Until the end of July this year, there had been 16 shootings in Malmö, while in 2018 there were 47 shootings. In 2017, there were 65.

Police superintendent Patrik Andersson does characterise Monday's shooting as a grim first, in that the victim was a woman, carrying her infant child. But he does not see it as part of an overall trend. Instead, he sats there are signs that even criminals think things went too far on Monday.
