Swedish fishing vessels not reporting their open-water catches correctly

A fishing organisation has called for local authorities to check all herring and sprat catches after it was revealed that numbers were not being accurately reported by fishing vessels.

These inaccurate reports are used by authorities to calculate fishing quotas each year.

The Swedish Pelagic Federation called for checks boating catching open sea fish that dock in Sweden.

An earlier investigation by Swedish Radio's Kaliber program showed that from almost 100 checks carried out by Danish fishing authorities on Swedish boats during the last three fishing seasons, about 50 percent more sprat and 50 percent less herring was onboard, compared to the numbers the boats had themselves reported.
