Freivalds’ Attack "Absurd"
Laila Freivalds has prompted more questions about her judgment by criticizing one of the few institutions praised for its efforts following the disaster, Swedish travel operators.
In a magazine interview, the embattled foreign minister claims the charter bureaus tried to avoid responsibility by refunding travelers for their holidays.
The comment comes as a considerable surprise, since the travel operators have been praised for moving swiftly to bring their stranded clients home, in the absence of action by Freivalds’ ministry.
The head of the largest operator involved, Fritidsresor, has called Freivalds’ remarks “absurd” and asks if she really means that they should have kept all their travelers in the disaster region for two weeks after the tsunami, rather than flying them home to Sweden as soon as possible?
