Guilty Verdicts in Liquor Bribery Scandal

Published måndag 19 december 2005 kl 17.15

Stockholm’s district court handed down guilty verdicts in the first of six trials connected with a massive bribery scandal within Sweden’s state-owned alcohol retail monopoly Systembolaget, on Monday.

77 Systembolaget store managers stand accused of allegedly accepting all-expenses-paid luxury trips, exclusive wine tasting sessions and other goods in return for promoting certain products.

The Stockholm district court found the managing director of the wine supplier Vin & Trädgård, and his secretary, guilty of having bribed 18 Systembolaget managers, who illegally accepted a total of some 24,000 US dollars from them.

All accused were sentenced to pay unspecified fines.
