CO2 Rights for Christmas

The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation is offering last minute Christmas shoppers an unusual opportunity – the chance to buy carbon dioxide emission rights, to keep polluting companies from doing so.

On January 1st the EU launched a system that enables companies to sell unused carbon dioxide emission rights to others which have exceeded their limits. But the sale is open to the public, and the nature society is offering carbon dioxide rights on its website.

Once a person buys the rights, they are kept with the society, and cannot be used by polluters. Since the start of the campaign on December 8th, 810 people and companies have taken advantage of the opportunity.
