2003 protest against the tolls in a Stockholm suburb

Opposition to Tolls Grows

Starting January 1st motorists entering Stockholm have to pay a new congestion charge. But according to a new poll, opposition to the system is greater than ever.

The survey, published in the daily “Svenska Dagbladet”, indicates that 69 percent of Stockholmers are against the new road tolls. Only 23 percent are in favor. Six months ago 59 percent were opposed and 30 percent in support.

City residents will only be allowed to vote in a referendum on the charges after the six month test is over. Two years ago unofficial referendums were held in 12 Stockholm suburbs, in which 80 percent voted against the congestion charges.
