First Day of Car Tolls Exceeds Expectations

Stockholm officials say there was 25 percent less traffic in the city Tuesday, during the first day of the new congestion charges.

The project’s goal is to reduce traffice in the center of the city by 10 to 15 percent. The controversial test lasts until July, and residents will vote in a referendum in September on keeping the 475 million dollar project.

An opinion poll on the eve of the trial showed 60 percent of Stockholmers against the tolls.
