Proposal to Merge Local Authorities

A new report suggests that Sweden’s 290 municipalities could be merged into just 100.

All of Sweden, including rural areas, is divided into municipalities. The report is a submission to a state commission, which is reviewing the entire Swedish civic structure.

Its author tells the TT news agency that the suggestion to merge so many of the country’s local authorities over the next 10 or 15 years is more of what he calls “an intellectual experiment”, but he says the government should simulate closer cooperation among municipalities.
