Swedish Driver’s Licences Too Expensive for Immigrants

Published onsdag 11 januari 2006 kl 11.22

A new study reveals that immigrants here are less likely to be motorists.

According to the National Road and Transport Research Institute, only half of immigrants here have a Swedish driver’s licence, compared to 80 percent of adults born in this country.

The institute says the cause is primarily economic. Swedish law does not recognize non-European driver’s licences for residents, and it is expensive to go through the procedures for a Swedish licence.

In a survey of more than 3000 people taking courses in Swedish for immigrants, 58 percent said that it costs too much to get a licence here.
