Ambassador Bengt Sparre

Hopes Again for Dawit Isaak Release

A Swedish diplomat has returned to Eritrea, and is believed to be negotiating again for the release of the Swedish-Eritrean journalist Dawit Isaak.

The Swedish Foreign Ministry is not commenting on ambassador Bengt Sparre’s mission, but in November he was believed to have been instrumental in Dawid Isaak’s temporary release from custody.

He is one of more than a dozen journalists jailed four years ago without trial, accused of being Ethiopian spies. It’s believed Dawit Isaak was imprisoned again because the international attention for his release embarrassed the Eritrean authorities.
