Saudi Arabia has backed down from barring women from attending an international soccer match with Sweden Wednesday evening.

There had been widespread calls here for the national team to boycott the game, after it became clear on Monday that women would not be allowed into the stadium. After talks with the Swedish embassy in Riyadh Tuesday, it was first announced that Swedish women would be allowed to watch the match, but only in the company of their husbands and families.

Later in the day the Swedish Football Association issued a statement, citing the Saudi Information Ministry,  saying that the game would be open to all spectators.
