Illegal Fish Scandal Forces Findus To Take Action

Published fredag 20 januari 2006 kl 14.46

Scandinavian frozen food company Findus has distanced itself from allegations that it uses illegally caught cod from the Barents Sea in its products.

The company has announced that it will discontinue purchasing from the fish wholesaling firm Kangamiut which has been accused of buying illegal cod from Russian trawlers. The accusation came in a Swedish television program aired this week.

Greenpeace targeted the head office of Findus in Malmö yesterday demonstrating their concern. 3 activists climbed up the facade of the building to hang up a banner reading ”stolen fish- empty seas”.

Global cod catch has suffered a 70 per cent drop over the last 30 years. The Barents Sea cod stock is now the world’s largest cod stock. One out of every five cod caught there is caught illegally.
