Gene Discovery: Hope for Parkinson’s Patients

Swedish researchers have found the gene which steers the development of the brain’s dopamine producing nerve cells.

The researchers at the Karolinska Institute hope their discovery could lead to new treatment methods in the fight against Parkinson’s disease. They hope stem cells could be turned into dopamine producing nerve cells which could then be transplanted directly into the brains of Parkinson’s patients.

The breakthrough was published in Friday’s edition of the periodical, Cell.
