Congestion Charge Hiccup: 45000 Haven’t Paid

Its been one month since Stockholm’s controversial traffic congestion charges were introduced in an effort to reduce the number of cars and improve air quality in the inner city. But after supporter’s initial celebrations at the reduced number of cars in the city each day, comes the hangover.

Some 45 000 Stockholmers have not paid the 2:50 US dollar road toll - and have now been charged three times that amount in extra fines.

Despite this, authorities are happy with the result so far. During January the tax generated some 6.4 million US dollars

The Stockholm experiment is a 6 month full scale test of the system - whether or not Stockholm will adopt the road-tolls permanently will be decided in a referendum in September.

The money generated in the test is to go to improving the capital’s public transit system.
