Justice Minister Thomas Bodström has proposed giving the police more power

Support for Police Bugging

A new poll seems to indicate support among Swedes for the government’s plans to give the police more power to fight terrorism and organized crime.

Eighty-eight percent of those surveyed said they approve of the police planting hidden microphones. Only 8 percent were opposed.

The government has also proposed letting the police call in the military to fight terrorism. That proposal is being sent to the Council on Legislation, where Supreme Court Justices examine legislation to confirm if it is constitutional.

The government’s plan, which includes monitoring e-mail and SMS text messages, has been criticised for encroaching on civil liberties.
