Freivalds Meets Moslem Ambassadors

Swedish Foreign Minister Laila Freivalds met with ambassadors from 12 Moslem countries Tuesday, in connection with the protests over the publication of satirical cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed in a Danish newspaper.

The building housing the Danish and Swedish embassies in Damascus was burned Saturday. Laila Freivalds says she explained the Swedish position, that even if Moslems feel insulted by the cartoons, an attack on an embassy is unacceptable, and that host nations are responsible to protect diplomatic missions.

The Swedish Foreign Minister said that the media here have shown restraint in publishing the images, but pointed out that the government cannot get involved in journalistic choices.
