Elections Open for Swedish Archbishop

The process of picking a new leader for the Lutheran Church of Sweden began Wednesday.

This is the first time a new Archbishop is being chosen since the church was split from the state. Instead of the government making the final decision, there are 790 electors.

After the first round of voting Wednesday, 5 candidates had the 5 percent support for the second round, three bishops, the head of a counselling and psychotherapy institute, and the sister of the current Archbishop, curate Anna Karin Hammar, who if elected would not only be the first women head of the Swedish Church, but also the first acknowledged homosexual.

The final vote will be next month.
