Young Women Leave Politics

Younger women are apparently leaving local politics here.

After going through official records, Swedish Radio News reports that just over one in twenty local councilors here is a woman under the age of 37. Many of those who were elected four years ago have quit, and in around 20 municipalities not a single young woman is on the local council.

According to a political scientist who has studied the problem, one explanation is that it is difficult to combine politics with starting a family. Another reason is that because of patriarchal power structures young women feel they are unable to influence decisions.
