Internet Chat Conviction

A Swedish teenager has been convicted for persecution of an ethnic group for racial slurs written on an Internet chatsite.

The girl, who was 17 at the time, was sentenced by a court in Borås, in southern Sweden, to 40 hours of community service and about 1300 dollars in damages.

The prosecutor says he thinks it’s the first case of its kind, and that he hopes it will make young people understand that what they write online is different than casual conversation.

Meanwhile, a 34 year old in northern Sweden has been indicted for creating a computer virus two years ago that caused problems in several corporate mail servers here. Prosecutors are calling for more than 25,000 dollars in damages.
