Gripen JAS-39 Fighter Jets to Hungary

The first delivery of 14 Swedish-made Gripen JAS-39 fighter jets leased by Hungary arrived Tuesday.

In 2001, Hungary signed a contract estimated to be worth over US$900 million to lease the jets for 10 years to replace its aging fleet of Soviet-made MiG-29s.

Hungary, which joined NATO in 1999, has the option to buy the planes at the end of the 10-year lease.
