Excitement Over Ancient Excrement

Swedish scientists have found half-billion-year-old droppings thought to be from an aquatic worm.

The researchers from Lund University hope the discovery will contribute to the understanding of prehistoric ecosystems.

Lund University researcher, Fredrik Terfelt told news agency AFP, ”We do not know much about ecosystems that are this old, so this find will give us an idea of how organisms interacted.” For example, the discovery shows that the worm exclusively ate two types of small invertebrates.

The fossilised excrement dating back 500 million years is said to be a unique discovery for this part of the world.
