Resistant Bacteria

Antibiotic Use Down

Swedish Radio News reports that doctors here are prescribing less and less antibiotics, and despite warnings from sceptics, there doesn’t seem to have been a corresponding increase in serious diseases.

In recent years the increased use of antibiotics has led to the development of more and more resistant bacteria. Now prescriptions here are down more than 20 percent, and children are being given antibiotics half as often as ten years ago.

Experts at a Swedish organization concerned about the spread of resistant bacteria say their research shows that diseases have not increased significantly, and say antibiotic use can be reduced even more here.
