Swedish troops leaving for the Congo in 1960

Swedish Troops to Congo

Sweden plans to send 70 soldiers to take part in the European Union force helping with July’s elections in Congo-Kinshasa.

Deputy Foreign Minister Carin Jämtin outlined the government’s plans to Social Democrat members of parliament Tuesday. Two-thirds of the 1500 EU troops will be stationed outside Congo, and will only enter the country if there are disturbances in connection with the elections. They’ll be the first free elections in the country since 1960.

On Thursday the government is to formally approve sending the force, which is expected to have the support of all parties in parliament.
