Swedish Palestinian Freed in Syria

The Swedish Foreign Ministry says a Palestinian-born Swedish journalist has been released from custody in Syria.

He was arrested earlier this month on arrival at Damascus airport, for allegedly insulting the Syrian state 10 years ago, when he interviewed an asylum-seeking Syrian for Swedish public television. The journalist was reportedly accused of tricking the interviewee in the comments.

The 61 year old Palestinian holds dual Swedish and Syrian citizenship. In announcing his release, the Swedish Foreign Ministry said no official reasons for his detention had been provided by the Syrian government.
