Mad cow disease fears lead to boycotts of Swedish meat

Earlier this year, Sweden had its first case of BSE confirmed, now several countries are refusing to allow imports.

Turkey has stopped the import of several thousand cows from Sweden and countries such as Saudia Arabia, Russia and Singapore are bringing in restrictions.

The Ministry of Agriculture is hoping to get Turkey to overturn its ban, and is suggesting a guarantee that cows wouldn’t be exported from the Västerås area in central Sweden, where the isolated case was discovered.

In recent years, Sweden had been the only EU country to enjoy a special low-risk BSE status.
