Many Refugees from Iraq

Last month saw the most applications for asylum in Sweden in almost three years.

More than 2300 refugees applied to stay here, the highest number since December, 2003.

The newspaper “Sydsvenska Dagbladet” says one reason may be the situation in Iraq, as more than one-third of the August asylum-seekers were from that conflict-torn country.

The immigration authorities also say the number of children arriving on their own and asking for asylum was twice as high as expected in July and August. There’s no indication of nationality or if this is related to the recent stream of young asylum-seekers from China who disappeared shortly after arriving in Sweden.
