Foreign Students Fail to Show

Swedish Radio in the southern city of Malmö reports that more than 90 percent of foreign applicants to universities here never show up.

Of more than 2300 foreign students who applied to Malmö University for the fall semester, only a couple of hundred have enrolled. Among the applicants were students from Nigeria, Pakistan, Cameroon, and Bangladesh. Many foreign students apparently apply here because there is no tuition at Swedish universities.

The prefect at Malmö University says one reason for the no-shows is that they may not have received visas in time.
