Possible Major Cable Merger

U.S. private equity firms Carlyle Group and Providence Equity partners reportedly want to buy the cable TV company UPC Sweden and merge it with rival ComHem, which they already own.

Carlyle and Providence, which bought ComHem in December 2005 for just over 1.3 billion dollars, have reportedly made a bid for UPC Sweden.

ComHem is Sweden’s biggest cable operator, with around 36 percent of the local household television market and 60 percent of the cable market. UPC is Stockholm’s largest cable operator, with around 1.4 million customers.
