Since its conception in 2011, conductor Paavo JärvisEstonian Festival Orchestra has gone from strength to strength. This year, it is touring for the first time, and will make an eagerly awaited guest appearance in the Berwaldhallen Hall, with highly praised accordionist Ksenija Sidorova! The concerto for accordion, Prophecy, by Erkki-Sven Tüür, reveals the Estonian composer’s background as a rock musician in its complex, syncopated rhythms and groovy, playful solo part.

In addition, Järvi and the orchestra will perform no less than two symphonies! Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 1 was his graduation piece for the conservatory in St Petersburg, which he attended from the age of 13. The maturity of the piece was astonishing, and a great contrast to the 19-year-old composer who, somewhat shyly, accepted the audience’s ovations. A journey to Italy inspired Jean Sibelius to write his Symphony No. 2 after the success of his first symphony and tone poem Finlandia. He himself described the symphony as the confessions of his soul. A friend and colleague said that the music “leads us into ecstasy, like a shaman with his drum”.
