Migration agency prioritising British applications for Swedish citizenship

Sweden is on track to see a record number of British people applying for Swedish citizenship this year.

Tobias Lundin, head of the Swedish Migration Agency's east region, said the agency is prioritising British applications because of Brexit, when the UK will formally leave the European Union. Lundin called the situation extraordinary.

To become a Swedish citizen, you need to have been living in Sweden for five years. For those married to, living in a registered partnership with or cohabiting with a Swedish citizen, they can apply after three years.

Some 1,300 Brits have sent in their application so far in 2019, compared to almost 2,000 for the whole of 2018. There are approximately 20,000 British citizens living in Sweden.
